Collagen Injections:

The most familiar is a biologic product called collagen (Zyderm or Zyplast). Injectable collagen is a soft-tissue replacement very similar to the human body's own structural protein. This collagen is a natural protein derived from purified bovine (cow) skin. The collagen is processed, purified, and sterilized so when it is injected into the body, it is accepted and actually takes on the characteristics of surrounding tissue.
Collagen is effective in smoothing shallow lines such as those around the lips and corners of the eyelids, and can also be used to fill deeper depressions like the furrows that form after years of smiling and frowning. It also enhances the effect of cosmetic surgery and is ideal for treating younger faces not yet in need of full surgical correction.
Collagen is not appropriate for treatment of tiny superficial lines such as those located directly under the eyes or for "ice-pick" acne scars and other scars with sharply defined margins. Because there is an approximately four percent incidence of human allergy to bovine collagen, every patient considering collagen treatment must be given a skin test to determine sensitivity. If no reaction is evident at the injection site after four weeks, treatment may begin.
Usually collagen is injected in small amounts over several treatment sessions. The procedure is done in the physician's office with little discomfort. You will probably notice some redness and swelling of the skin around the injection site. Application of an ice pack will reduce this.
Minor adverse reactions can occur due to excessive exposure to the sun or heat, alcohol consumption, attacks of hay fever, or other causes of nasal sinus congestion.
Injectable collagen is gradually reabsorbed and eliminated by your body. Additional maintenance treatments will probably be desirable every three to twelve months in order to derive the maximum benefit.
