Aesthetic surgery of the lips is most commonly performed for the purpose of enlargement and less frequently for lip reduction. Fine wrinkles around the mouth may be worsened by the lip atrophy which accompanies the aging process. Restoration of lip volume can greatly reduce the number and severity of peri-oral wrinkles.

The earliest recommended age for lip augmentation is usually in adulthood.

Enlargement of the lips can be achieved utilizing a variety of procedures which can be classified as those using: 1) injectable fillers, 2) surgical placement of implants or 3) surgical incisions to advance the red portions of the lip and make them appear larger. Fillers/implants may be biologic (autogenous collagen, human donor collagen, bovine collagen, blood/gelatin, preserved human dermis, autogenous fat, autogenous tissue cultures, etc) or alloplastic (PTFE, ePTFE, etc). Implants are available in a variety of materials and marketed under numerous labels i.e., Zyderm®, Zyplast®, Fibril®, Alloderm®, Autologen®, Dermologen®, Isolagen®, Gortex®, SAM®, etc. Questions about the technique, size, and type of implant to be used, as well as any concerns about the safety and present status of injectables/implants will be discussed during consultation with your surgeon. Lip reduction is achieved through the use of incisions placed just inside the mouth along the upper and lower lips.

Lip surgery can be accomplished in the office or outpatient setting depending on the surgical procedure selected. Surgery can be carried out under local, intravenous sedation, or general anesthesia. This procedure usually takes approximately 15 minutes to one hour to perform. Lip surgery produces moderate discomfort which can be controlled by medication. Antibiotics will be prescribed to minimize the chance of infection when implants are used.

Following surgery, you will be asked to keep your head elevated and apply ice to diminish swelling and discoloration. The duration of these factors varies. Collagen injections are usually associated with the least bruising and make-up can frequently be applied immediately after the procedure. Surgical placement of implants or lip surgery necessitating incisions are accompanied by considerable swelling which is greatest during the first week following surgery. Mild asymmetry can occur. Diminished lip sensation is not uncommon and usually improves with time. You can be up and about within a day, but strenuous activity and heavy lifting should be avoided for approximately 1 week.
