Chemical peels can be formulated at different strengths in order to provide a customized approach to each patient’s needs. A mild peel may be all that’s recommended for a patient with concerns over skin tone and texture, while a patient who wants to improve more serious issues such as scarring or irregular pigmentation may require a stronger peel.

For areas of the skin that have sun damage, chemical peels can be especially beneficial, as the process can actually remove some pre-cancerous cells and help prevent new ones from forming. Although very popular to improve the appearance of facial skin, chemical peels are often used on other parts of the body, such as the chest or the backs of the hands.

A variety of peeling agents ranging from phenol and croton oil to TCA, glycolic acid, lactic acid, salicylic acid with added supplementary ingredients are used for various indications. Skin preparation with retinoids and a skin care routine may also be recommended for both pre-operative regimens to optimize healing and as an essential component of the post-operative practice to maintain results.

During a chemical peel, Dr. Placik applies a custom formulated chemical solution over the treatment area. As the solution soaks into the top layers of the skin, a controlled process removes the top, damaged layer of skin cells which begin to “peel” away and separate from the rest of the skin. As the body works to repair the damage, your complexion develops a fresher, healthier-looking appearance thanks to the natural healing process. Following up your chemical peel with medical-grade skin care products can help further nourish your complexion.

Chemical peels are performed in Dr. Placik’s office on an outpatient basis. Most patients describe application process as a stinging feeling, or report a heating or cooling sensation. The entire process usually takes less than 30 minutes, although deeper peels may take up to 60 to 90 minutes and could require a sedative for patient comfort.

Following a chemical peel, patients should avoid the use of makeup to allow the skin time to heal properly. Preventing any sun exposure is strongly recommended after a peel, but sunscreen and a hat should be used if sun exposure is unavoidable. The results from a chemical peel generally last for several months, but new wrinkles or sun spots can develop over time as the aging process continues. Many patients find that incorporating periodic chemical peels into their regular skincare regimen is the best way to keep their complexion looking consistently vibrant and refreshed.

Chemical Peels FAQ

Am I a good candidate?

Men or women who want to improve the appearance of their skin and correct fine lines, wrinkles and sun damage or brighten a dull complexion may benefit from chemical peels. However, people with darker skin types are usually not good candidates because a peel may cause hypopigmentation, or lightening of the skin. In some instances, it may be best to perform a test patch on skin hidden behind the hairline.

Which type of chemical peel is right for me?

Mild chemical peels can improve skin tone and texture and restore a youthful, vibrant glow. A gentle chemical solution is applied for this superficial kind of peel. Medium peels penetrate the skin more deeply than mild peels and can provide improvement skin concerns like sun damage or even fine lines and wrinkles. Stronger peels penetrate the deepest and require the most downtime, although they can improve more serious skin concerns like scarring or irregular pigmentation.

How much do chemical peels cost?

The cost of a chemical peel varies on the size of the area being treated and how strong the chemical solution is. Dr. Placik and his staff strive to provide excellent value and can help you with financing to make your treatment even more affordable.

How much downtime is required after a chemical peel?

The milder the chemical peel solution, the less downtime will be required. However, even the gentlest peels will likely produce mild redness and some skin peeling for a few days. Deeper peels can sometimes result in blisters or scabs, and peeling for up to 2 weeks. Some degree of swelling usually occurs with any chemical peel. In the event of severe reactions, prescription ointments or oral steroids may be prescribed.

What are the risks?

Although chemical peels are relatively safe, there is a risk of infection, scarring or a change in pigmentation, although these side effects are rare. Determining whether or not you’re a good candidate for a peel and choosing the right peel for your skin type is the best way to ensure you’ll receive optimum results with a low risk of complications.
