Plastic surgery trends often change depending on a generation’s preferences. There are times in which Chicago liposuction takes the lead as America’s number one plastic surgery procedure, while other times, non-surgical treatments like Chicago Botox become the popular choice for self enhancement. But while everyone has their go-to procedure, a recent report by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS) has revealed that one particular plastic surgery treatment has increased in popularity drastically over the past decade – upper arm surgery.

No one likes to show off their arms if they suffer from loose or flabby arms. The dreaded arm jiggle, which affects nearly everyone at some point in their lives, is a cause for many embarrassing moments. Having excess skin and fat under the arms can lead individuals to hide beneath long sleeves, even when it’s warm outside. No one should have to suffer with this common problem, and no one has to, thanks to upper arm plastic surgery.

Known as an arm lift or Brachioplasty, the procedure reduces excess skin and fat between the underarm and elbow, which may be due to significant weight loss or a loss of skin elasticity.  Some patients opt to combine the surgery with liposuction if they have a significant amount of fat to eliminate, increasing the benefits of their overall treatment. For patients who have less fat or excess skin, a mini arm lift may be requested instead.

But whatever the reason the surgery is sought and how extensive the patient requests the treatment to be, truth is, people of any age can suffer from loose skin and fat in the upper arms, so it is no wonder that this area has become an increasingly targeted spot by patients undergoing plastic surgery.

But just how popular has upper arm surgery become?

According to the ASPS’ annual report, released on Monday, the benefits of upper arm plastic surgery have reached across the nation. The treatment has become so popular, figures show that the number of arm lift procedures has increased by a whopping 4,473 percent since 2000.

But aside from looking younger and healthier, what accounts for the drastic increase in the number of arm lift procedures being performed in the past 13 years?

The ASPS believes the media has played a significant role in the decision of patients to undergo brachioplasty. Many people – both women and men – have turned to plastic surgery to resemble their favorite celebrities. The latest craze involved a wave of women seeking Rhinoplasty to reshape their nose to look like Kate Middleton. There was even a time when Brazilian butt lifts were all the rage, with women seeking to look more like their favorite curvaceous celebrities, like Kim Kardashian and Jennifer Lopez.

Throughout history, trends in fashion, entertainment and even home décor have been influenced by celebrities, so it doesn’t come as a surprise that plastic surgery trends would also follow what’s popular in Hollywood.

So who is spearheading the trend in arm lift surgeries?

An ASPS poll surveyed women to determine whose arms are most flattering. The results were not the least bit surprising.

According to the poll, the top five celebrities with arms women most admire are:

Michelle Obama: 31%
Jennifer Aniston: 29%
Jessica Biel: 16%
Kelly Ripa: 13%
Demi Moore: 11%

Here at Body Sculptor, Chicago plastic surgeon Dr. Otto Placik has received numerous requests from patients who want to look like their favorite celebrities, and for many individuals, what they most admire about these celebs is their great arms.

If you live in Chicago and are considering an arm lift treatment, Dr. Placik will help determine the approach that’s best for your individual needs.  The way the procedure is carried out can vary, depending on how much excess skin or fat you would like to have removed. Some incisions are longer than others, but for some patients, especially those who are seeking a mini arm lift, incisions are so small and barely noticeable than it is hard to believe a surgical procedure even took place.
